Tilton’s 4.5″ OT-V carbon racing clutches offer a unique combination of extremely low inertia, high torque capacity, high heat capacity, smooth engagement characteristics, and long life. Because of these features, 4.5″ carbon clutches are used predominantly in the following applications:

  • Road racing
  • Open-wheel/Formula

The carbon matrix plates (driven and floater) do not warp from heat, providing consistent shifting and minimizing heat-related clutch failures. The smooth engagement characteristics of the carbon plates provide excellent drivability and reduce shifting shock to other driveline components.

Through the use of additional pressure plates (shims) and periodic rebuilds, 4.5″ OT-V carbon racing clutches offer a long-life option for the serious racer. These are a few of the reasons that Tilton’s 4.5″ carbon clutch is the official clutch of the Indy Lights series.

The moment of inertia for Tilton’s 4.5″ OT-V carbon racing clutches ranges from just 11.4 lb-in2 (.0033 kg-m2) to 15.3 lb-in2 (.0045 kg-m2). This is the lowest M.O.I. range of any Tilton clutch, and it translates to extremely quick acceleration and shifting capability.

Tilton’s 4.5″ carbon clutches range in weight from 2.6 lbs (1.2 kg) to 3.8 lbs (1.8 kg). High Torque Capacity Tilton’s 4.5″ carbon clutches can handle 230 lb-ft (313 Nm) of torque per plate.

Through the use of replacement pressure plates (or shims, designed to compensate for normal carbon plate wear) as well as periodic rebuilds, Tilton carbon racing clutches can boast a considerable lifetime.
